Darkness, Come

When day is done and night has come;
I’ve watched the rays of the setting sun.

 Then darkness comes from her hiding place,
And streaks her shadows across my face.

 I seem to fear and cry for day.
“Oh, let this night be gone!” I pray.

 But darkness comes surrounding me
With blackness thick; and I can’t see.

 It’s forces linger ‘til I think I shall die;
And then a glow comes from the sky.

 The light emerges and dispels the night.
I forget all my fears in the warmth of the light.

 All through the day my joys increase,
Although I know light soon will cease.

 But somehow when darkness comes again,
I realize that she’s my friend.

 And if I made it through before,
I surely know I can once more.

 So, darkness, come; but you cannot stay.
For light will return at the breaking of day.
